Typically, in western society, education is a standardized and enforced program in which all children are obligated to attend. While this is not the case in other cultures, it has been the cultural norm in North America for an extended period of time. The standardized education system for the general public is an asset to society in many aspects as it allows for (presumably) equal education for all citizens. However, I believe that learning does not only occur in the classroom and that the world is the best classroom for any individual regardless of age. Therefore, my definition of education is that it is any experience which is conducive to learning and/or personal growth. There is so much knowledge that is crucial to personal development that is not taught in the classroom. Integrated learning which takes advantage of multiple realms used to enhance education, such as outdoor learning and technology, bring alternative skills and learning into traditional style classrooms which are often not found in the usual methods of teaching.
